Is it just me or does it seem FAR more interesting to find a sofa with good bones and outfit it in spectacular fabric than to search for the perfect sofa with the perfect fabric? I think that most would agree that it’s much more exciting to create than to click and buy (or search and pound pavement.)
And what’s more exciting, there is a whole world of possibilities at your fingertips. Did you know that you can have almost any fabric you desire (and you don’t have to pay outrageous prices?) In addition, you can easily find an upholsterer that will work with you to create a majestic piece of art.
What are your options and where do you start? First of all, there are many amazing textile companies that sell fabric to the general public (not just “to the trade.”) A few of my favorites include: Reprodepot, Knoll, I luv Fabrix, Tonic Living, Architex , Rubie Green, and Designers Guild.
You can also find “to the trade” designer fabrics by working with an interior designer or by going through a qualified “middle man.” Linda Merrill of InsiDEecor, works with the general public to deliver to the trade fabrics at a substantial discount.
Here are a few on her site that made my short list:

Once you have your piece, use Domino’s fabric calculator to figure out how many yards you are going to need.
